C21 Media - Dori profit leaps, distribution head hired - August 15th, 2006

Israel's Dori Media Group is calling the first half of 2006 its "strongest ever," with revenue up 49% and gross profit up 121%, largely thanks to the global upswing in telenovela programming.

The company posted interim figures showing group revenue up 49% to US$9.65m, gross profit up 121% to US$6.75m, and pre-tax profit more than quadrupling to US$2.12m. Net profit at the firm jumped from US$139,000 in the first half of 2005 to US$1.72m.

Dori has been capitalising on the new global demand for telenovelas, which now extends from eastern Europe and Germany to Holland and even the English-speaking market in the US, driven by hits like FremantleMedia's Bianca and RCN Colombia's Ugly Betty.

Dori's own titles that are selling well include Rebelde Way, sold to Cableuropa and Grupo Sogecable's Cuatro channel in Spain, MTV Germany and ORF Austria, "demonstrating that the telenovela is universal and when dubbed it can still appeal to non-Spanish European audiences."

Dori's latest teen telenovela El Refugio (The Shelter) is following in the footsteps of Rebelde Way, selling to Spain's PretesaGroup for broadcast on its regional channel Localia from September 2006. Sos Mi Vida, meanwhile, was sold to undisclosed networks in eastern Europe after Discop.

The company has also appointed the head of its new distribution arm, Dori Media Distribution (DMD), the launch of which replaced a rep deal with Argentinean partner Telefe International. Ex Telefe sales chief Silvana D'Angelo is now running DMD as head of international sales and marketing.

The launch of DMD comes as international sales doubled their share of total sales in the first half of 2006, climbing from 33% of total revenues in H1 2005 to 68%.

Announcing the interim numbers, CEO Nadav Palti said the company would continue rolling out telenovela channels "in appropriate markets during the second half of 2006 and beyond," following the launch of Viva and Viva Platina in Israel and Televiva Vision 2 in Indonesia.
