Financial Times - Telenovela sales lift Dori Media - August 16th, 2006
By Philip Stafford
Dori Media, the TV producer and broadcaster of "telenovelas", has reported its strongest interim results thanks to increased international sales of the melodramatic serialised fiction series.
Similar to soap operas, telenovelas tend to last about six months and draw huge TV audiences before coming to a climatic close.
They tend to be popular in Latin America although Dori's biggest hit was the teen telenovela Rebelde Way, which was a blockbuster in many European countries, particularly Spain and Austria.
Sales from telenovela broadcasting rights more than doubled to Dollars 4.16m (Pounds 2.2m). They now account for about two-thirds of total revenue, up from 46 per cent a year ago.
Overall group revenue for the six months to June 30 rose 49 per cent to Dollars 9.65m.
Pre-tax profit climbed from Dollars 476,000 to Dollars 2.1m while earnings per share rose from 1 cent to 9 cents. Its shares closed up 5p at 71p yesterday.
