C21 Media - Dori Media to roll out telenovela channel - July 7th, 2005

Israeli producer-distributor Dori Media Group is planning to launch a global telenovela channel with the £3.23m it recently raised on the London Stock Exchange. It is also considering launching its own distribution arm.

The Tel Aviv-based firm, which specialises in the production and distribution of telenovelas, as well as owning telenovela channels Viva and Viva Platina in Israel, unveiled its new post-IPO strategy to C21 today.

"Going forward, our main strategy is to develop an international 24-hour telenovela channel," Dori Media Group ceo Nadiv Palti said. "In each country it will be dubbed to the local language. We are hoping to have deals in place in one or two territories later in 2005 with more deals in March next year," Palti added.

As well as the obvious telenovela-loving territories of Spain, Hispanic US and Latin America, Palti said that Germany and Eastern Europe would be likely targets.

DMG's flagship telenovela, Rebelde Way, has already sold in 40 countries worldwide, including a recent deal with MTV in Germany. Already popular across Eastern Europe, telenovelas are now gaining viewers in Europe's biggest TV market. ZDF already airs the FremantleMedia telenovela Bianca - Road to Happiness, Sat.1 aired Being in Love in Berlin while Kabel 1 picked up Finding Rodrigo.

Palti said he is also currently in negotiations to sell Dori's telenovela scripts to unnamed partners in Spain and Germany. In other territories, a similar format deal was recently made in India, with Star One reproducing the Rebelde Way series locally.

On the mergers and acquisitions front, Palti said there "were no concrete plans for now," but such moves might be considered at a later date, as well as establishing Dori's own distribution arm. It currently has partners such as Telefe International onboard in Latin America.

"We now have the resources and catalogue to launch our own distribution arm and via enhancing our production in South America and Israel, it is definitely something we will consider in the mid to long term," he said.
